Painting Haystacks

In this workshop Lorenzo demonstrates his process for painting from a reference photo in the studio while staying true to the original scene. He focuses on teaching how to paint as the human eye sees, not as the camera captures a scene. He discusses how to draw the viewer’s eye to a focal point on the canvas. This lesson encourages students to develop their composition skills, allowing them to improve the quality of their finished pieces.

Mixing Color
Understanding Paint Pigments

Lorenzo Chavez teaches us the color mixing skills that will allow us to master our paint pigments and more accurately capture the scene we observe. When we look at a paint color from a tube, we are seeing a combination of certain properties including hue, temperature, value and chroma.

In this lecture, Lorenzo explains how each of these properties influence his choice of pigment for a painting. He explains how to use this knowledge to control the intensity of your color mixtures.

Seeing Color
Understanding Natural Light

Lorenzo Chavez teaches us how to see the subtleties of color in a landscape. He shares his understanding of the 3 crucial light effects in nature, gained through years of study, observation and practice painting plein air.
This knowledge frees the artist from preconceived notions and color formulas, allowing them to more fully capture the mood and light of the day in their paintings.

In his lecture, Lorenzo discusses the theory of reflected light and demonstrates how he applies that theory to his own work, to create paintings that are both true to the scene and filled with rich, Impressionistic color.
